107-yr-old freedom fighter passes away, finger pointed at AMRI

Kolkata: AMRI Hospital in Salt Lake has been accused of not releasing a patient, a 107-year-old freedom fighter, misbehaving with his family members and finally forcing them to give an undertaking, as some amount of money was due for realisation.

The family members of the victim alleged that the hospital authorities were reluctant to shift the patient to the state-run hospital, despite producing a letter from the Chief Minister's office.

The patient was finally released by the private hospital after taking an undertaking from the family members,

after they promised to pay the dues. The patient, Sudhir Krishna Das, a resident of Basirhat in North 24-Parganas, was admitted to the hospital on March 30, after he complained of various age-related ailments. He was shifted to the ICU on the next day.

The family members claimed that the bill produced by the hospital had reached Rs 4 lakh, of which Rs 2.5 lakh had already been paid. The patient eventually died at NRS Medical College and Hospital, where he was shifted.

As the family members found it difficult to arrange more money, they sought intervention of the Chief Minister office. Following the intervention of the CMO, an ICCU was arranged for the patient at NRS Medical College and Hospital.

When the family members finally asked the private hospital authorities that they wanted to shift the patient to a state-run hospital, they had been subjected to misbehaviour by some of the staff members of the hospital.

Despite the letter from the Chief Minister's office being produced before the senior officials of the hospital, the family members were allegedly heckled. The hospital authorities allegedly denied to release the patient, when the family members were ready to pay the due amount through cheque.

They allegedly refused to accept the cheque from the family members and forced them to give an undertaking, promising to pay the amount within a stipulated time.

According to the family members of the victim, there was a long delay on the part of the private hospital's authorities.

The patient's health condition had deteriorated and he died on Sunday morning. Following the incident, the victim's family members also lodged a complaint with the West Bengal Clinical Establishment Regulatory Commission in this regard.
