10 injured after bus crashes into another
Kolkata: As many as 10 people were injured, some of them critically, when a private bus hit another from behind on VIP Road near Haldiram's on Thursday.
The incident triggered tension in the area with vehicles stranded on the busy stretch.
The injured passengers were rushed to a private hospital. The police said the incident took place at around 2.30 pm when the driver of a BN17 bus lost control and rammed into a V1 vehicle from behind. The two buses were being driven at a high speed and in the same direction — from the Airport side towards Ultadanga.
The driver of the BN17 bus was critically injured while locals came to assist the traumatised passengers. Eyewitnesses told the police that the accident happened when the bus, which was ahead, suddenly stopped and the one that was behind it had halted for passengers, lost control and rammed into it.
The locals failed to rescue the driver who was trapped in the mangled bus. After receiving information, the police reached the spot and rescued him by cutting open the frontal part of the vehicle.
He was rushed to a private hospital and his condition is said to be critical. The incident led to traffic congestion on Thursday afternoon. The police have seized the vehicles and started a probe in this regard.
The residents alleged that buses often ply through the area at top speed, violating traffic norms, resulting in accidents.
The traffic became normal after the police cleared the road.
