JU will not file FIR against any student: VC

Jadavpur University will maintain its autonomy and the freedom of speech and democracy of students will be the topmost priority but the students should be responsible, its vice chancellor Suranjan Das said on Friday.

Das met Governor KN Tripathi at Raj Bhavan and submitted a report on the rally from where anti national slogans had been raised a few days ago.

It may be recalled that the students union had took out a procession to express solidarity with their counterparts in JNU and repressive measures of BJP government to stifle the voice of democracy. From the rally slogans like “Kashmir mange azadi, Manipur mange azadi and hum chin lenge azadi” were raised.

Das condemned the anti national slogans with the students union also expressing their solidarity with him saying that raising such slogans were uncalled for. The Governor had asked Das to give a detailed report on the matter.

Das categorically said no action would be taken against the students. He said a students’ convention would be held in Jadavpur where the views of the university would explained to the students and their views would also be heard. He said that the problems if any would be resolved through discussion. “I will maintain the autonomy of the university and the freedom of expressions of the students would be respected but the students should also be aware of their democratic rights   and responsibility.”

Jadavpur University has become the centre of activities and has witnessed rallies and counter rallies for the past few days. The rightist and the Leftist unions have joined in hand to thwart ABVP movements. The students have expressed satisfaction over the statement of the vice chancellor and welcomed his view that the problems could be sorted out through dialogue.
