Jaya to be sworn in as TN Chief Minister on May 23

Around eight months ago, the 67-year-old was convicted in a corruption case and forced to step down in the midst of her third term as the Chief Minister.

Saraswathi added that Chief Minister O Panneerselvam (OPS) would tender his resignation soon after the MLAs meeting and party chief Jayalalithaa would be sworn in as chief minister the following day. “<g data-gr-id="30">Yes</g> it is confirmed. OPS will resign on May 22 and on May 23 our party chief will become the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu,” she said.

“DMK and other opposition parties are afraid of our chief and that is why they talk unnecessary things about the RK Nagar by-election. All other questions will be answered on May 23,” she said.

While Jayalalithaa has announced the date of the MLAs meeting, the date of her swearing in was not clear. On Sunday, the party’s RK Nagar MLA P Vetrivel handed over his resignation to the Assembly secretary, without citing a reason for it.

It is now believed that Jayalalithaa would contest from this Chennai constituency. As per election commission norms, she would have to get elected within six months of her assuming charge as the
Chief Minister.
