IPL kicks off in style despite rain delay

Heavy rain failed to dampen the spirit of Kolkata as IPL-8 kicked off to a glitzy start with Bollywood stars Anushka Sharma, Shahid Kapoor and Hrithik Roshan performing to some of their chartbusting numbers, in Salt Lake stadium on Tuesday.

The ceremony began after one-and-a-half-hour delay at around 9 pm with Saif Ali Khan taking the stage as anchor, dressed in spotless white kurta pyjama. “Rain or shine the celebration will continue that’s how we love our cricket. Now we have a new season apart from monsoon, summer, winter and spring and that’s the season of IPL,” Saif said in his opening address.

The cheer was loud for Virat Kohli, louder for MS Dhoni but loudest for their ‘very own’ Gautam Gambhir. After Ravi Shastri read out MCC’s ‘Spirit of cricket’ oath, all the eight captains walked on to the stage to sign a bat to thundering applause.

It was then Bollywood star Shahid Kapoor’s turn to dazzle the audience with an electrifying performance.

Shahid was followed by the graceful Bollywood actor Anushka Sharma who regaled the audience with some of her hits, with her boyfriend Kohli watching her moves. The crowd went into a frenzy when Bollywood superstar Hrithik Roshan took the stage and dished out a superb performance with his elegant dance moves.
