India should experience me: Taboo

Jaime Luis Gómez, better known as Taboo of the Black Eyed Peas, was at the Amber Lounge dressed in red and brown jacket, glares and brown sneakers that matched with the sleeves of his jacket. He looked every bit the celeb Delhi has been waiting for. So what brought Taboo to India?

‘We, the Black eyed Peas, have always taken some time off from the band and done our own stuff. Although I have never done anything beyond the band. So this time I am here as Taboo to give India the Taboo experience. Also I am a B-boy for life,’ said Taboo.

He added, ‘Taboo experience is all about MC, DJ,visuals, instruments, traveling and interacting with the fans and more.’

And if he has to define his music, he says there is just one word for it: magnetic.

Speaking about himself, Taboo said he came from a Mexican neighbourhood. ‘There were Chinese, Asians, Vietnamese and blacks. And if you didn’t stick to the Mexicans, you were an outcast.’

‘My love for hip-hop and hanging out with the blacks made me an outcast and that’s where I got my stage name ‘Taboo’.

‘In fact, I also have a son from my ex-girlfriend who was a black,’ he said.

About his boyhood days, he said he was totally into gadgets and technology and owned several collections.

‘As a child, I owned so many GI Joes, comics and also some odd game collections like US versus Bin Laden,’ he said.

He has a fetish for shoes. ‘I own about 600 pairs of shoes and have a shoe store at my house,’ he laughed.

The 35-year-old rapper said this is his second time in India. The first time was in 2007 when the Black Eyed Peas came to Mumbai for a performance, but he doesn’t know much about Bollywood music except Slumdog Millionaire. He added: ‘I am going to tour the Taj Mahal and also experience Indian culture.’

So far the best experience of a live performance, he said was Brazil 2007, ‘where about a million people turned up for the performance.’

His big break was in the year 1993 in high school where his group had won the talent show. ‘Although it was a small thing, it is something I will always treasure. It was an immense achievement for me.’

But his greatest achievement is being a father to his three kids.

‘My kids and family are everything to me,’ he said.
