‘Immoral’ sex can lead to cervical cancer, says Delhi govt hoarding

CGHS Maternity and Gynaecology hospital in RK Puram, Sector 5, has displayed a public awareness hoarding, which states, ‘Immoral sex can cause cervical cancer.’

When Medical Superintendent of CGHS,  Deepali Hazarika, was asked about the same, she said the hospital was not responsible for the hoarding and Delhi government had put it up.

Cancer specialists in various hospitals said ‘immoral’ is a totally incorrect term, and that Delhi government does not have an authority to define an individual’s morality.

Shyam Agarwal, chairman of department of Oncology, Sir Ganga Ram hospital, said, ‘Yes, having unprotected sex with multiple partners can cause cervical cancer. The Human Papilloma Virus gets transmitted from one individual to the other. But this has nothing to do with  morality, only
unsafe sex.’

Gopal Sharma, senior medical oncologist at Galaxy Cancer Institute, Pushpanjali Crosslay hospital, said, ‘The correct term to be used in this ad should be multiple sex partners not immorality. The government doesn’t have the right to term an individual’s choice as immoral.’

When Delhi Health Minister AK Walia was approached, he said, ‘I don’t have time to comment on this right now.’
