Head-on collision kills five in Bankura district

Five people, including three of a family were killed and six others were injured when the vehicle they were travelling in collided head-on with a dumper in West Bengal’s Bankura district on Sunday, a police official said.

The accident occurred at Bhatra village, 8 km from Bishnupur, at around 2 pm, Superintendent of Police Nilakanta Sudhir said.

The SUV, carrying 11 passengers, was heading to Radhanagar from Bishnupur when it was hit by the empty dumper coming from the opposite direction, the SP said. Five persons died on the spot. They included three members of a family — Chanchal Ghosh (45), his wife, Shibani Ghosh (30) and daughter Reba Ghosh (6). The other victims were a woman Soma Sarkhel (30) and the driver of the SUV Ananda Mondal (25).

Of the injured, two were admitted to Radhanagar primary health care centre, four to Bishnupur sub-divisional hospital from where two were transferred to Bankura Sanmilani Medical College hospital, the SP said. The driver of the dumper was absconding, the SP said adding that the vehicle had been seized.
