HC directs status quo on Kandi Municipality chairman’s poll

The Calcutta High Court on Thursday directed status quo be maintained on election to the post of chairman of Kandi Municipality in view of alleged abduction of an independent councillor.

Justice I P Mukherjee directed that status quo be maintained on the election till disposal of a petition challenging the process in view of alleged abduction of councillor Debojyoti Roy, whose vote would have played a pivotal role in the election to the post of chairman. The Trinamool Congress and Congress are evenly poised in the Kandi municipality, which has a strength of 18 members.

While TMC has 9 members, Congress has 7 members and is supported by 2 other independent members.

A petition had been moved before the high court challenging TMC's move seeking re-election in the chairman's post. Roy had gone missing a few days before the election and had been found on Saturday last, a day after the election was held.
