Haryana keeps Delhi thirsty

Things got out of hand between the two Congress states, Delhi and Haryana, which are at loggerheads over water supply for a week now. On Thursday, Haryana had arbitrarily and drastically curtailed the water supply further, resulting in 30 MGD less production of water in Wazirabad Water Treatment Plant.

Earlier, Haryana had curtailed water for Haiderpur Plant by 15 MGD.  A total of 45 MGD is bound to create acute shortage of drinking water for Delhiites in the coming days. The worst affected areas would be north and west Delhi, New Delhi and Chandni Chowk.

Around 25 lakh residents in Khayala, Patel Nagar, Moti Nagar, Kirti Nagar, Narela, Bawana, Wazirabad, Transport Nagar, localities surrounding north of Rajpath and old Delhi would be severely affected.

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit had earlier said that she would go to the prime minister for a solution.

On Monday, Chief Secretaries of both the states, P K Tripathi and P K Chaudhery, had met over the water issue. Dikshit has been trying to speak to her Haryana counterpart, but all efforts went in vain. Meanwhile, sources said that the city government would take up this issue at all levels as Delhi is not just a city but national capital as well.

Already, Munak canal issue has been a bone of contention between Delhi and Haryana. Delhi is yet to receive the 80 MGD water that was promised.
