Gujarat’s uneasy wait till poll dates

Main political parties - the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the opposition Congress party have exhausted their energies in the very first phase of campaign for the assembly elections. While Congress has made all possible accusations against the Modi regime while BJP has nothing more to do with CM Narendra Modi’s Vivekanand Yuva Vikas yatra ending last week.

This piquant situation has arisen as Election Commission of India has announced the election dates almost 70 days earlier this time giving no chance to BJP to continue its propaganda war by organising more functions seeking great publicity in both print as well as electronic media.

Normally election dates are announced in 40 days limit but this time elections in Gujarat are to be held on 13 December and 17, hardly a month ahead of the expiry of the term of the 12th Gujarat state legislative assembly. The term of the current assembly expires on 18 January.

Political observers feel that the election dates have been fixed in December and the model code of conduct enforced perhaps only to restrict Modi government from continuing its spree of distributing money for various projects and other largesses to woothe voters. Congress in turn also gets enough time to expose the misdeeds of the Modi government and to secure faith and confidence of voters in their future projects particularly in the fields of housing and education.
