Institute of Minimal Access, Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery [iMAS] at Sir Ganga Ram hospital has created a record in performing the highest number of robotic surgeries in India. With an average of 25 robotic surgeries per month, iMAS with a 10-member surgeons’ team has been identified as the prolific robotic surgery team.
Dr Vivek Bindal of iMAS, said, 'Robotic bariatric surgery at iMAS has become a hit not only in India, but with patients from across the globe. They come for weight loss surgeries as well because that can be performed at 1/10th of what it would have been charged in the USA.'
Bindal also added that 'In India, it cost between Rs 2.5 lakh and Rs 3 lakh, depending on the degree of obesity.'
According to sources, 'Bariatric surgery or weight loss surgery is now becoming one of the most commonly performed arthroscopic operation worldwide, including India. One of the advances in bariatric surgery is the use of robotics. The surgeons at iMAS are using state-of-the-art robotics to conduct bariatric surgery on even morbidly obese patients.'
Sources also added that at the heart of the procedure is the 'Da Vinci Si High Definition Robotic System'. Using this sophisticated robotic platform, the surgeons can use miniaturised instruments inserted through small incisions in the abdomen and the smallest movements of the surgeon’s hands are translated to these instruments, allowing the procedure to be conducted with precision, which translated into less pain, less blood loss, minimal scarring, a shorter hospital stay and the ability to return to normal activity quickly.
Dr Parveen Bhatia, chairman of iMAS, said, 'Over the years we have been performing bariatric surgery with excellent results, however robotics has given a new dimension to the surgery. The 3D vision helps them access the inaccessible, the procedure not only reduces the pain caused to the patient, it significantly reduces the chances of infections and also reduces the healing time immensely.'
Bhatia also added that 'The robot gives physicians technical advantages – improved ergonomics, better visualisation and precise instrumentation. This allows them to perform the delicate and complicated surgery with agility and accuracy.'
