Gang inspired by Dutt's 'Vastav' busted

Five people, who call themselves the ‘Pakistani gang’, were arrested by south district’s special staff police on Thursday for at least 12 cases of robbery and dacoity.

The arrested robbers were identified as Rattan Chopra alias Pakistani [33], the gang leader and close associate of Bakkarwala, Jitender [28], Chander Prakash [27], Sonu Singh [25], and Amit [27]. All of them had recently come out of jail and are apparently inspired by the Sanjay Dutt starrer Vaastav. According to deputy commissioner of police [south] Chhaya Sharma, Jitender is famous among his gang members as ‘Raghu Bhai’, the character that Dutt played in the famous movie.

He even has tattooed the name on his right arm. Gang leader Chopra is a close associate of infamous carjacker, Manoj Bakkarwala.

Sharma said the arrest came following investigation conducted in a recent case of vehicle theft, where the accused robbed a man of his Innova car in Vasant Kunj on knifepoint. Their involvement in the Nizamuddin train robbery has also been revealed.

With their arrest, police claimed to have solved several cases of vehicle theft and robbery in trains. Police recovered a pistol with 11 live bullets, a dagger and six robbed cars from their possession.

‘Prakash, a lifetime convict in a murder case who jumped parole, was the first to be arrested along with Singh. They were caught travelling in a robbed Santro car in Malviya Nagar area. At their instance, other gang members were arrested,’ said Sharma.

The gang, Sharma said, moved in stolen cars with fake number plates and carried weapons. They looked for luxury cars and robbed the occupants by scaring them with weapons.

‘Apart from vehicle theft, the gang also snatched jewellery and robbed people in moving trains. They used to stop the train in a secluded area using a coin in the track to complete the circuit and change the signal from green to red. As soon as the train halted, they would enter the AC compartments and rob passengers at gunpoint,’ added Sharma.
