Four army personnel killed in J&K encounter

After a fierce gunfight, four army soldiers and a local militant of Hizbul Mujahideen died on Friday in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district.

The operation, which started in the morning at Buchoo village in Tral, around 40 kms from Srinagar, was launched on a tip-off about the presence of militants in the forest area.

‘Around 8 am, we launched the operation. The militants opened fire on our men. This led to the on-spot killing of three jawans and injury to another. He died in the hospital later,’ said Army spokesman Lt Col Ankur Vashist.  The cordon and search operation was launched by the army’s 3 Rashtriya Rifles along with a special operations group of the police. The militants, believed to be four in number, were hiding in the nearby forests.

One militant, identified as  Saifullah, died while his counterparts managed to escape. The army spokesman said a search operation has been launched in the area to hunt down the other militants. A day ago, security forces had claimed a major success after killing a top Lashkar militant in Srinagar city.
