Five IPS officers from NE to join DP

Perhaps the fact that the five new Indian Police Service (IPS) officers to head Delhi Police units hail from Northeastern states might pacify the community living in Delhi, whose security is being increasingly threatened and is being discussed in earnest in the Parliament.

According to orders released recently by the Union Home Ministry, five of the eight IPS officers hail from Northeastern states and would be joining the force soon.

John Neihlaia is currently posted at Mizoram, while Kime Kaming, Nabam Gungte, Apurbitin and L N Rangchal from Arunachal Pradesh have been transferred to Delhi to lead the units, as per the ministry orders. This move is said to be unprecedented and clearly shows the importance being accorded to the issue of security for Northeastern people living in Delhi by the government.

Rajan Bhagat, spokesperson of Delhi Police, confirmed that for the first time so many Northeastern officers would be joining the force in Delhi.

The other two IPS officers, Devender Arya and Vijayanta Arya, would be joining their Northeastern counterparts as soon as they complete their training. Two senior IPS officers Robin Hibu and Anil Shukla have also been transferred back to Delhi from Arunachal Pradesh.

According to orders, 23 IPS officers are going to be shifted from Delhi to Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Puducherry, Mizoram, and Dadar and Nagar Haveli.

With the recent death of Amity University student Dana Sangma in Gurgaon near Delhi, the security concerns of Northeastern community has become one of the pressing issues that is being discussed in the Parliament. After a huge hustle and bustle in the Parliament, the Home Minister promised that he would do the necessary in this context to Rajya Sabha.

Delhi Police had already established a special safety unit to ensure the protection of Northeastern students of Delhi University in North and South districts. In such units, the Northeastern students could lodge their complaints regarding racial discrimination and other crime related matters.

These units came into existence after Northeastern people complained that the police officials were not paying heed to their problems.

'This will at least give us Northeastern people living in Delhi a reason to smile,' said a Manipuri student.
