A first year MBBS student studying at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata has died of dengue at a private hospital off EM Bypass late on Wednesday night.

Malini Banerjee (18), a resident of Durgapur, was tested positive for dengue some 10 days ago. She was initially treated at the R G Kar Medical College and Hospital. But after her condition began to deteriorate, her family shifted her to a private off E M Bypass. Her blood platelets count dropped alarmingly and her condition worsened on Wednesday, she had to be put on ventilator. But she died due to multi-organ failure late on Wednesday night.

According to reports, several inmates of hostel at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital are suffering from high fever and some of them have also been confirmed having dengue.

Lack of sanitation and steps to prevent breeding of mosquitoes in and around the campus has been blamed by the students for the untimely death of a bright student who had done her schooling from Hem Sheela Model School, Durgapur.
