A fire broke out at a multi-storey building at Burrabazar early on Wednesday morning. A paper godown housed on the third floor of the building caught fire and soon it had spread to other floors.
Local people spotted smoke billowing out of the building and informed the fire brigade. Seven fire tenders were pressed into action to douse the flame.
Local residents also took part in the rescue operations. According to the fire brigade, many other shops housed on the first, second and third floors were affected in the incident. After putting an effort for nearly three hours the fire fighters brought the situation under control.
The fire brigade and police are yet to ascertain the cause of the fire and the extent of the damage. Preliminary investigation revealed that a short circuit might have caused the fire. No injury was however reported in the incident.
The incident triggered panic among some people who reside at the building. Police had however evacuated the building to prevent any mishap.
