Spreading awareness about 'girl child safety'
On the occasion of International Day of the Girl Child, Sachhi Saheli, an NGO based in Delhi organised a sensitization-cum-training workshop on the topic of 'women and girl child safety' to commemorate the day. The workshop was organised in association with Delhi Legal Services Authority (East, North-East, and Shahdara) at EDMC Auditorium, Patparganj Industrial Area, New Delhi.
The theme of the programme was 'Nigrani nahi, jaankari chaihiye', that aimed at raising awareness regarding the safety of women and the girl child in order to stress the message that it is essential to equip the girls with essential knowledge that they need to protect themselves.
It was inaugurated by Sanjeev Jain (Ld Member Secretary, DSLSA), Arvind Bansal (Secretary, DLSA North-East), Dr Surbhi Singh (President, Sachhi Saheli), Akash Jain (Secretary, DLSA, Shahdara) and Pawan Kumar (Secretary, DLSA East). The felicitation of the guests was done by a team of renowned artists coordinated by Yasmin Sultana who presented their paintings to the esteemed guests.
At the inaugural address, Sanjeev Jain (Ld. Member Secretary, DSLSA) said, "As a society we have to come together to ensure that our women and girls are looked after and to do so all the systems in place to protect their welfare must come together and I hope through this program, we can find ways to make these systems more accessible to the ones who need them."
Addressing the audience, Dr Surbhi Singh (President, Sachhi Saheli) said, "I am glad that women and girls are now speaking up about their experiences related to sexual assault and violence as it is the first step to curb such heinous crimes. It has now become all the more important to address these voices and make available to them the interventions that are needed. It is also essential that as teachers and parents we speak to children about this topic and educate them about good touch and bad touch so that they can protect themselves as well. We must instill in them the philosophy, 'Tu Bolegi Muh Kholegi Tabhi Zamana Badlega' and empower them."
Subsequently, at the program, Delhi based and popular Asmita Theatre Group performed their play to throw light on the issue. The same was followed by an intensive Panel Discussion on the topic, 'Making Institutions Accessible' that was moderated by Dr Surbhi Singh and included the following panelists: Dr Neeraj (DDE, North East), Pankaj Jain ( DCP, East), Akash Jain (Secretary, DLSA, Shahdara), Pawan Kumar (Secretary, DLSA East), Manoj Dwivedi (ADM, North-East) andRanjana Prasad (Member, DCPCR).
The audience included teachers from all schools in Trans-Yamuna and the ASHA workers from the area as well who enjoyed themselves and were glad to receive an important take-home message from the event. The program was concluded with a vote of thanks by Arvind Bansal and with the distribution of Sachhi Saheli 5-P sanitary pouches and folders that included informative booklets from DLSA and Delhi Police amongst the audience.
Sachhi Saheli also works to raise awareness regarding good touch and bad touch.
