Bringing Mizoram art to forefront

The state of Mizoram– nestled in the far northeastern corner of the country – remains a treasure trove of art yet to be introduced into the mainstream Indian contemporary art world. It's the place where artists pursue their artistic dreams undeterred by the lack of commercial gain and acclamation is a far cry from the likes of Hussain's and Raza's.

To bring such art in the forefront, India International Centre in collaboration with Government of Mizoram is organising a group exhibition titled 'Contemporary Art', from February 20-26, 2019, at the Art Gallery of IIC.

On studying the current condition of the Mizo art scene, one can find wide arrays of styles and techniques largely influenced by western art practices and idioms. However, the Mizo identity and sensibility come to fore in matters of the subject and contextual affiliations, giving their work unique flavors and freshness that can be wonderful contributions in the already blooming contemporary art scene of the country. It is at this juncture that a need arises to look beyond borders and connect the dots to situate the Mizo contemporary art practice into the larger framework of Indian contemporary art. This exhibition attempts to bridge the geographical gap and provide a platform to showcase the talents of budding young Mizo artists.

Paintings in oils, acrylic and mixed media by artists from Mizoram like V Laltlanmawia, Isaac Malsamtluanga, Vanlalhriata, Laltanpuia, Lalramchuana Sailo, V Lalzawmkima, David Ralte, and others will be displayed during the art show.
