Ex-colonel’s son held for car theft

Delhi police has apprehended the 39-year-old son of a retired colonel for allegedly running away with a Renault car on the pretext of test drive from Khan Market in May. The car costs Rs 27 lakh.

The accused, Rahul Pandey, holds a degree in aeronautical engineering, and is also a Master of Business Administration, was arrested from his residence in Sector 29 of Noida on Friday. The stolen silver coloured Renault Koleos was also recovered from his residence. He lives with his parents in Noida and his father is a retired colonel.

Pandey’s was arrested by special staff team, led by inspector Arun Kumar, who managed the arrest with the help of technical surveillance of mobile phone he was using and thus zeroing on his residence.

Pandey had served in Merchant Navy for eight years and then he shifted to Australia to pursue MBA. He married, got divorced and shifted back to India in 2010. He was employed with BMW in Gurgaon, but had to leave the job after he fell ill.

He planned the theft in May and called a dealership in Moti Bagh in south Delhi for a test drive. He posed as Mukesh Kumar and used a stolen SIM card.

On 29 May, Sunil Kumar, an employee of the dealership, came to Khan Market and met Pandey, who drove around the car and asked Sunil to come back on 30 May after fresh servicing.

When Sunil returned with the car on 30 May, Pandey posing as Mukesh drove around and told Sunil that he would have to get approval from his wife before finalising the deal. He drove towards Noida and suddenly on DND flyover; he forcibly pushed Sunil out of the car threatening him of dire consequences and fled with the car.

Sunil immediately filed a police complaint and teams started working on the case. Police zeroed in on owner of the SIM card, a cyber café owner, who said that his phone was stolen in February 2012 and he had made a PCR call in this regard as well.

However, he had not blocked the SIM. This helped police to track the accused.
