DU to engage non-teaching staff in admission process

According to sources on campus, the university will engage non-teaching staff to maintain smooth admission process in its colleges. “Taking into account teachers call to boycott the admission process for undergraduate courses in its various colleges, the DU admission committee  has decided to engage non-teaching staff to carry out the process this year,” sources said.

A similar decision was taken in 2010 when the teachers’ body had boycotted the admission process. But the process had witnessed an anomaly as the non-teaching staff had admitted more students than the number of seats.

The Delhi University Teachers’ Association (DUTA) members, who have been boycotting the evaluation process since May 24 in protest against the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) notification to ascertain their performance, had announced to boycott the undergraduate admission session two weeks ago.

The DUTA had also called to boycott the ‘staff committee meetings’. “We have no option left other than to boycott the admission process. We have been boycotting the evaluation process, but our voices are being subdued,” said AK Bhagi, Executive Council member, DU.

The teachers, who have been boycotting the evaluation of undergraduate examination papers in protest against amendments to the UGC regulations, argue that the changes would lead to around 50 per cent job cuts and drastically decrease the pupil-teacher ratio in higher education.

The commission’s notification has increased the workload on assistant professors from 16 hours of direct teaching (including tutorials) to 18 hours per week, plus another six of tutorials, bringing the total up to 24 hours. Similarly, the working hours of associate professors have been increased from 14 to 22 per week.

The registration for admission to DU’s undergraduate programme has been closed and the university will release its first cutoff list on June 30.
