Doctor held for duping people on pretext of giving admission to medical colleges

Police have arrested a doctor on the charges of duping people with assurances that he would secure medical admission for them at various medical colleges.

The accused Dr Santanu Tathagata Roy, a resident of Salt Lake had allegedly duped a few lakh rupees from various people whom he had promised to secure admission at the undergraduate medical courses. Police arrested the accused from Kalyani in Nadia on Tuesday night.

After receiving some complaints from the victims, police had started an investigation and came to know about the whereabouts of the accused who has been involved in this illegal business of cheating the medical aspirants in the state. The accused was remanded in police custody after being produced to a district court on Wednesday.

On the basis of the specific complaints, the Bidhannagar police had started a probe. Acting on specific information, a team of police officers from Bidhannagar Commissionarate raided a house at Kalyani and arrested the accused. The investigating officers came to know that the accused used to demand lakhs of rupees from each medical aspirant with fake promises of securing admission for them in the different medical colleges in the state. 

A senior police officer under the Bidhannagar Commissionarate said that three specific complaints of cheating were lodged at different police stations against him. According to the preliminary investigation, police suspect that the accused has duped many medical aspirants with fake promises not only from the city, but also from the district. Police are investigating if the accused had secured any medical admission in any medical college in the state.

Police are interrogating the accused to know if any other person was involved in the crime. Police are also investigating if the accused has any connection with the Swasthya Bhavan. A detailed probe has been initiated in this connection.
