Dimple declared elected from Kannauj

Dimple Yadav, wife of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav was declared elected unopposed from the Kannauj Lok Sabha bye-election after two candidates in the fray against her withdrawing their nominations.

Chief Electoral Officer Umesh Sinha declared the result of Kannauj on Saturday. 'Three candidates had filed nomination for the Kannauj seat. As two withdrew their names and only Dimple Yadav was left in fray, so she was declared elected unopposed,” he told reporters.

Dashrath Singh Shankhwar (Samyukt Samajwadi Dal) and Sanju Katiyar (Independent) had withdrawn their nominations in support of Dimple Yadav on Friday.

The seat had fallen vacant after resignation of Akhilesh Yadav following his election as Leader of the SP Legislature Party. After being sworn in Chief Minister he became member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council.

The Congress had opted not to contest the election. Its national general secretary Digvinay Singh said Congress had not fielded candidate even in 2009 elections so it would not contest the bye-election too. The BSP had decided to keep away from the bypoll alleging the ruling party of continuing with its tradition of dynastic politics by fielding Dimple.

On the other hand BJP declared its candidate on the last minute but Jagdev Yadav failed to file the nomination before the prescribed time. He blamed SP workers for preventing him from filling papers.

It is first electoral victory for 35-year-old Dimple. She had suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of Congress' Raj Babbar in the by-polls for the Firozabad Lok Sabha seat in 2009.

The Vidhan Sabha had passed a one-line resolution on Friday congratulating Dimple Yadav for her victory. The resolution was proposed by Revenue Minister Ambika Chaudhry and was passed by a voice vote.
