Difficult times on anvil for traffic cops

Come monsoon, and the Delhi traffic police would have a relatively tough job as they would have to handle seven government agencies to combat water logging in the city.

The South Delhi Municipal Corporation [SDMC] has agreed to shoulder the burden of only 19 roads out of a list of 243 roads vulnerable to water logging provided by Delhi Traffic Police. Earlier, MCD took care the desilting of drains and arranged for water pumps, so that water logging could be avoided during the monsoon.

‘We have the responsibility for cleaning the drainage of 19 roads in the list. We have sufficient water pumps to pump water from these areas and will complete desilting by June end,’ said Savita Gupta, Mayor, South Delhi Municipal Corporation [SDMC].

A maximum of roads prone to water logging falls in the jurisdiction of Public Works Department [PWD]. According to new rules of the Delhi government drains that are more than four feet deep and wide would be taken care by PWD.

‘The traffic police is requested to take up the matter with respective agencies. We could only ensure that there is no water logging in areas under our jurisdiction,’ said a senior official of SDMC.

The North Delhi Municipal Corporation [NDMC] has 25 roads to take care of while the East Delhi Municipal Corporation [EDMC] has only four roads. The authorities could not decide the ownership of C R Wasan Crossing road.

Mangla Puri Chowk and DIIDC road in Narela is jointly owned by PWD and DDA while PWD and NDMC would take care of Gali no 10 and 4 near New Rohtak road. DSIIDC would be responsible for the stretch of GT road near Rajasthan Udyog Bhawan. Two stretches has also been allotted to National Highway Authority of India.
