Delhi’s hospitals not prepared to handle spurt of swine flu

Looks like promises are made to break for Delhi politicians. Though they have promised better infrastructure to deal with ever increasing swine flu cases – 58 patients were admitted on Friday, of which two of them died – capital is having a tough time  in catering to the needs of the patients.

For instance, six more new swine flu patients have been admitted in the Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) hospital on Friday. But due to lack of an isolated ICU, swine flu patients are being kept in a special ward. When things took a turn for worse, as was the case with six, they were taken to the ‘general’ ICU.

And  RML is a nodal hospital, and it was a known fact that it would receive a maximum number of swine flu patients as compared to other hospitals in the capital.

Medical Superintendent of RML hospital, Dr H K Kar said, ‘There is no death in the past 24 hours. As of now, vaccination is not needed. This should have been done earlier. At this stage only Tamiflu would act as an immediate protection. But we are expecting that this spurt of swine flu would reduce in the days to come.’

But with 58 more swine flu cases, Delhi has already totalled a whopping 301 cases. The two that died on Friday include a 43-years-old man (Apollo hospital) and a 50-year-old woman (Jaipur Golden hospital). This month alone, the virus infected 262 people, of which six have died. In January, 39 cases were reported and one succumbed to the virus. According to the Delhi government, last year 78 swine flu cases and one death was reported.
