Two killed as speeding car hits auto rickshaws, accused held

New Delhi: The errant driving of a-23-year-old man claimed the lives of two auto-rickshaw drivers in Swaroop Nagar area of Outer North district on Monday. Police have arrested the accused who was coming from Murthal with his four friends in the car. The deceased were sitting inside their autos when the incident happened.

According to police, the accused Mohit, resident of Bhairon Enclave, Palam is pursuing graduation from the open university. His reckless driving killed Sanjay (40) and Jaikishan (36) who lived with their families in Swaroop Nagar area. One of the deceased claimed to be the sole bread-butter earner for his family. One person was also injured in the case.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (outer north) Gaurav Sharma said that no liquor traces were found in the body of accused Mohit. He failed to control his Maruti SX4 car which was driven at high speed.

Elaborating more about the case, DCP Sharma said that on Sunday night, at 1:52 am they received a PCR call in which the caller told them about an accident near Swaroop Nagar bus stand and the injured were serious. On this information, police staff immediately reached the spot where picket staff was already present. On the spot, two autorickshaws and one SX4 car were found in the accidental condition. Both the injured were immediately sent to BJRM Hospital. Later they were immediately referred to LNJP Hospital. At about 8:30 am, both the injured died during treatment.

"During the investigation, it has been revealed that car driver Mohit was coming from Murthal after having dinner and going home with his five friends. At about 1:40 am they reached near Swaroop Nagar Bus Stand GT Karnal road and hit the parked autos with drivers who were waiting for passengers at the bus stand," said the DCP, Outer North.

DCP Sharma further added that in this incident, three autos were damaged.

The car driver was apprehended on the spot by the police picket staff.

"Further legal action is being taken," police said. A case under sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of IPC was registered at Swaroop Nagar police station.
