Three extortionists arrested

New Delhi: Delhi Police on Sunday said that they have arrested three persons who were involved in an extortion case in the West Delhi area.

The law enforcement agency stated that one of the accused was the victim's friend who in the greed of money passed information to other accused. Police identified the accused as Gurpal (29), Jaspreet (38), Banny Singh (24).

Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Monika Bharadwaj said that on April 21, the complaint alleged that he received a ransom call demanding rupees 20 lakhs.

The caller further threatened him that if the extortion money is not paid, his family will be eliminated. On the intervening night of April 20-21, someone fired two rounds outside the house of the complainant to pressurize him to pay the ransom money.

DCP West said that on the basis of secret information and after the interrogation of about 60 suspects Gurpal, who had fired outside the house of the complainant was arrested.

At his instance, co-accused Jaspreet who made the ransom call to the complainant and Banny Singh, who leaked the information of complainant to accused persons were also arrested.

Police said that the accused persons disclosed that the information was leaked to them by one Banny Singh, who was a close friend of the complainant.

"Banny Singh informed them that complainant Navdeep Singh is earning a lot of money and upon easy pressure, he can pay them money, without informing the police," DCP said.

They hatched a conspiracy and arranged a mobile SIM of Odisha on forged ID and old second-hand mobile to make the ransom call.

Jaspreet using a voice changing application made a ransom call to the complainant and demanded rupees 20 lakhs.
