Start installing street lights: CM to UD dept

New Delhi: Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has directed the Urban Development department to initiate the work of installing street lights in Delhi under the Mukhya Mantri Streetlight Yojana, before the end of this term of the Delhi government. According to sources, the department has finalised the tender process and the financial allocations have been cleared. By December 15, the Delhi government is expected to announce the initiation of the work in this field. The Chief Minister has also instructed all the MLAs to begin the process and present the basic draft on the spots where the street lights will be installed.

Urban Development Minister Satyendra Jain in an interview with Millennium Post said, "It was a challenge to get the MCD to install the street lights. Plus installing new lights in itself was a challenge as people did not want poles outside their houses as their cars are parked there. Therefore, many colonies are dark in unuthorised colonies. Also the backyard of bungalows are dark as people light up the entrance only. So while installing CCTV cameras a solution came up that the way we are installing CCTV cameras in houses we decided to install street lights in a similar way. We take the connection from their houses and reimburse them for the electricity consumption."

In a bid to apprise the people of Delhi, the AAP-led government will launch a mega campaign before December 15, on the installation of the street lights. An official said that in this campaign, the MLAs will take the lead and reach out to the people, Resident Welfare Association (RWA), and other stake holders to identify the dark spots so that street lights can be installed there.
