Power outages in Gurugram: After residents, now political parties hit the road

Gurugram: Six hours, nine hours and in some cases even twelve hours, yes this is the duration of power outage being reported from various parts of Gurugram despite officials claiming it to be a power surplus city.

The long duration of power outages in the city has resulted in not only flaring tempers among lakhs of residents but also giving local politicians the opposition to raise the issue of infrastructure. On Tuesday, Congress, which is the main opposition party in the state, held a protest over the long duration of power outages in the city. The protest was held in the Sadar area, the most central part of Old Gurugram.

While the officials at Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN) said that efforts are being made to improve the power supply in the city, the residents do not seem to be impressed by the claims. The residents have to face not only long duration of power cuts but also low voltage.

With the transformers of the city electricity board unable to bear the heavy electricity load, most areas in the city are receiving voltage supply of around 150-180 volts. This has resulted in a large number of cases of transformers and power cables blowing up that further results in power outages.

The impact of low voltage and power-cuts is also felt in posh areas of the city like DLF, Sushant Lok and condominium societies like Golf Course road as there is a high level of power consumption in these areas.

What is the use of boasting about a power surplus Gurugram, when large parts of the city are still running on generators, was one of the angry reactions on social media after the long power-cuts.
