PCR vans attend over 4K calls related to crime against women

New Delhi: While the nation is still reeling in shock after the Hyderabad and Unnao cases, the Delhi Police has been on their feet to protect the women of the city. Delhi Police's PCR unit attended over 4,500 actionable calls related to crime against women this year. Delhi Police data revealed that, till December 13, over 500 calls related to rape and more than 800 calls of eve-teasing were attended by police. The PCR vans are covering more than 325 vulnerable routes frequented by families, working women, night revellers through intensive patrolling to regular intervals.

The PCR staff also attended over 400 domestic violence calls, 200 calls of missing women, over 350 calls related to attempt to suicide, 400 suicide calls, more than 100 kidnapping calls and other such miscellaneous calls.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (PCR) Sharat Sinha said, "Their prime mission is to immediately reach to women in distress and provide them instant help. In some occasion, PCR staff have also apprehended eve-teasers." According to police officials, there is a total of 15 all-women mobile police vans intended to enhance the safety and security of women. These all-women PCR vans are deputed to cover the area of Rajiv Chowk Metro Station, Patel Chest, Vishwa Vidhyalaya metro station, Lady Shri Ram College, SV College (South Campus), Mata Sundari College, Karol Bagh Metro Station, Dayal Singh College, CGO Complex, Gargi college, Nehru college and Laxmi Bai college in Ashok Vihar.

Police further said that all-girls schools, colleges are covered by PCR vans especially at its opening, closing time to safeguard the girls from incidents of eve-teasing, molestation, snatching. "Daily, the PCR vans identify non-functioning street lights and dark stretches of roads and this information is then forwarded to the head of the civic agencies by e-mail," police said. Last year about 32,80,568 distress calls were received PA-100, NERS-112. The PCR vans attended 29,73,620 calls. "In several occasion, there are multiple calls for one incident which increases calls," police said.

Recently, the Delhi Police have identified 75 street crime hot spots in the city. These places were identified on the basis of street crime calls related to robbery, snatching and eve-teasing. Areas like Rohini Sector-24, Rohini Sector-21, Bawana Industrial Areas in Sector 2&4, Akshardham Temple, Jalebi Chowk Sultanpuri, Rohini Sector 15, Mukarba Chowk, Burari Chowk Ring Road, Shastri Park Red light, Inderprastha flyover ITO were among the top 75 such localities.
