Pay Metro fare at AFC gates with smartphones

New Delhi: Soon, Metro commuters will get the option of paying the fare with their smartphones at the automatic fare collection (AFC) gates of Airport Express Metro stations.

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is all set to introduce a ticket payment system which uses the QR code scan system by August end, where a smartphone application will be scanned at the AFC gate for the ticket.

A DMRC official said, "The Corporation has already installed 24 AFC gates equipped with QR scanner facility, with four AFC gates for the entry and the exit points to facilitate the cashless move. The QR scan process has been under trial for the past two months and has ended now.

He added that commuters will need to download the RDLR application, available at Google Play Store for Android phones, in which commuters will need to select DMRC which will display the six Airport Express Metro stations, after which commuters can select the destination station to entry station.

"To pay the fare, the application will connect with the debit card of the commuter's bank. Once the bank payment gateway will connect to the application, the amount will be deducted and an automatic Metro ticket will generate with the bar code. With that bar code, commuters can cross the AFC gate by just showing to the bar scanner at the installed QR installed AFC gate," the official added.

The 22.7 km Express Line corridor consists of stations namely New Delhi, Shivaji Stadium, Dhaula kuan, Delhi Aerocity, Airport and Dwarka Sector-21, with each station will have two AFC gates for entry and two for exit.

The Express Line has an average ridership of nearly 55,000 daily.

Earlier too, DMRC had provided the same QR code scan facility during the inauguration of the Heritage Line section of Violet Line at Lal Quila and Jama Masjid Metro stations. However, the services were not properly used due to lack of awareness and minimum distance between these stations.
