Over 100 calls of crimes against women this Puja

New Delhi: During Durga Puja, people worship the Goddess Durga and seek her blessings. This sort of reverence for the womankind, however, seems to exist only in pandals and not on Delhi's roads, as Delhi Police received over 119 PCR calls of crimes against women during the festival.

Police sources claimed they took immediate action after receiving information about such crimes.

According to police data accessed by Millennium Post, between October 10 and 17, cops received eight calls of rape cases, 18 of eve-teasing cases, and 93 of other sorts of crimes against women including domestic violence, stalking and dowry.

Cops claimed that they took strict action in all these cases.

During Durga Puja last year, as many as 49 calls were made to the helpline numbers, which included 34 calls of eve teasing, 13 calls of rape and two calls of molestation. No calls of stalking were received during the period.

After receiving such calls, city police do not waste any time in taking action.

According to sources, during Navratri, tight vigil is maintained on suspected eve-teasers as police personnel, including women constable, are deployed in plain clothes nearby pandals and Ramlila shows.

This season, cops beefed up security around malls, pandals, Ramlila maidans and markets.

Moreover, security at the Delhi Police Metro Unit also remains tight, with Deputy Commissioner of Police (Metro) Deepak Gauri claiming they have taken every preventive measure and deployed proper arrangements near Kalkaji Mandir and other interchanging Metro stations.

In October, a total 21 criminals were arrested from Metro jurisdiction. While nine criminals were caught by public and then handed to the police, cops nabbed 12 of them.

Delhi Police's Railway unit also increases its vigil during the festive season.

At Ramlila ground, North Delhi Police has made elaborate arrangements to ensure safety of devotees. Officials have held meetings with different Ramlila committees to apprise them of the security arrangements.

Over 80 CCTV cameras have been installed at strategic locations to keep an eye over the proceedings. Cops are also keeping an eye on gangs.
