Newborn baby tests positive, kept under observation at AIIMS

NEW DELHI: Days after a baby who was born healthy to a COVID-19 positive mother was also found positive, according to official sources at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here. The baby's mother who was nine-months pregnant had tested positive on April 2, after her husband, a senior resident doctor working in the department of physiology at AIIMS, was found to be infected with the virus. "Four days after the baby was born, it was found positive," the source said. Both the mother and the child are under observation, while the baby is not in a serious condition, according to the official.

"Everything is being monitored at the moment. Tests are being conducted and the baby is under strict observation," said the official. According to doctors, this is the first baby to be born to a Coronavirus infected woman in Delhi. The AIIMS has already prepared a protocol dedicated to the care of COVID-19 infected pregnant woman patients. Earlier, the doctors had reportedly said that there is no proof suggesting that the virus can be transmitted through breastfeeding. Health Ministry said 477 people have recovered and been discharged from the hospital so far. There have been 591 new cases, and 20 new deaths reported in the last 24 hours.India's total number of Coronavirus cases has reached 5,865, including 5218 active cases, out of which 478 have been either cured or discharged. Meanwhile, 169 people have lost their lives due to the pandemic.
