Kid not provided infection-free room by Fortis hospital in Gurugram, confirms report

Gurugram: Having faced a lot of negative reactions on the treatment of Adhya Singh, there can be more troubles in store for Fortis hospital Gurugram on the issue of credibility, ethics and patients trust. In the latest case of medical negligence involving the hospital, the district health department has blamed its management for the death of one-and-a-half year-old Vansh.
Suffering from a rare enzyme deficiency, the patient was admitted in the hospital in April last year for the bone marrow replacement. However, he breathed his last on May 15, 2017 after contracting infection during the course of treatment. Alleging that the patient was not provided an infection-free room by the hospital that resulted in the death of Vansh, his parents filed a complaint against the hospital with the district health department. They also alleged that the hospital charged them a bill of Rs 27 lakh that was way more than the bill amount of Rs 13 lakh that was agreed upon.
In a major relief to aggrieved parents, the district health department in its report stated that as the infection-free room was not provided to the patient, it subsequently resulted in the loss of a young life. Ironically this case occurred four months before the Adhya case that not only affected its reputation but also compelled the Haryana government to take stringent action against the private hospital.
On September 14 last year, Adhya was contracted dengue and succumbed to her illness after the disease got complicated. Questions, however, were raised on the medical treatment provided to the patient. During her 15 days stay at Fortis hospital in Gurugram her parents were charged an amount of Rs 16 lakh.
The expression of anger against the private healthcare system in the city is not a recent phenomenon. However, deaths and exploitation of minor patients in quick succession in some of the private hospitals have resulted in a group of citizens to demand action against erring hospitals.
The government on their part has claimed that lack of law in the state has tied the hand of authorities towards taking strict action against erring hospitals.
After action against Fortis hospital in Gurugram, people who have been victims to the malpractices of other private hospitals in Gurugram now want action against the management of other hospitals. Not only Fortis but there has been other private hospitals in the city where recently shocking incidents of negligence and apathy took place.
The statement from the Fortis hospital said, "While we have not received any formal information from any authority, we strongly refute all allegations of negligence in the case related to Vansh. The patient was suffering from Hunter's Disease (Mucopolysacchridosis Type 2 ), a rare genetic disorder with very high mortality rate for which he underwent bone marrow transplant,
"The child was treated as per best medical protocol available in the country. While the pain and despair of the family is understandable, blaming the doctors and hospital is unfair without understanding the medical facts of the case," the statement further said.
