JNU installs 500 KWp rooftop solar photovoltaic power plant

New Delhi: The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has commenced the production of green energy by installing a 500 KWp solar photovoltaic power plant at the roof top of the administration building. M Jagadesh Kumar, Vice-Chancellor, JNU and John Kerry, Former Secretary, United States of America jointly inaugurated the 500KW roof top solar plant installed at the varsity on Monday.

JNU which implemented the project under Solar Energy Corporation of India's (SECI) 1,000 Mwp Grid connected Rooftop Solar Photovoltaic System scheme for Government Buildings will enjoy Solar Power at a flat rate of Rs 3.39 per unit for 25 years, thereby helping the University to save over 60 percent in power cost for the equivalent electricity purchased through Conventional Source of Supply. This will reduce carbon emission by 700 tons every year, JNU said in a statement.
