Irani gang member wanted in over 150 cases arrested

Ghaziabad: An active member of Irani gang who was wanted in over 150 cases of theft, robbery and other crimes was arrested by Ghaziabad police from Sahibabad area on early Thursday morning.

Cops said that the accused has been identified as Dharamveer Singh, who is a commander of the Gwala unit in Irani gang and is a native of Jalpaiguri district in West Bengal. "The accused was wanted in cases of robbery, theft and other criminal incidents in police stations of Delhi, Assam, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh," said police officials.

According to police, the Irani gang-members are known to be experts in tricking people to rob them and are excellent riders. They are known to operate as chain-snatchers and even pose as policemen to rob people.

Shlok Kumar, Superintendent of police (city) said that the accused was wanted in a cash robbery incident from an executive with a private company in Sahibabad area a few weeks ago.

"Police acted upon a tip-off received from an informer and a team from Sahibabad police station was deployed in the area. The details of the accused were shared with the police team and upon matching them, they arrested the accused," he said.

Upon interrogations, he told police that they keep on changing their location to commit crime. The gang members used to conduct recce outside bank and snatch cash from those who come out from the bank after puncturing the tires or open the locks of vehicle with some tools,"

Kumar added.
