Inadequacy of lady cops: Only 600 among 5,881 personnel work in Gurugram police

Gurugram: The strength of Gurugram police may have increased with growing population but the number of lady cops is still under represented.

According of an official data by Gurugram police, there are 5,881 police personnel which is a substantial increase from 2,500 officials in 2016.

Despite the increase in numbers, the major challenge has been the inadequacy of lady police officers.

The data further reveals that there are only 600 women cops working under Gurugram police that makes the representation of barely 10 percent in the largest police force of the state.

Moreover, in the 25 senior positions of Gurugram police comprising the ranks of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) and Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), there are only three lady police personnel.

To improve the women safety, the Haryana government has opened two women police stations and also, recently introduced 20 Durga Shakti PCRs where mostly lady cops are deployed. There are also a substantial number of women officials in Gurugram traffic police.

The shortage of lady police officials are felt mostly in Gurugram police helpline number (1091) for women citizens. According to the complaints, there are fewer lady officers for the investigation of crime against women, .

The crisis of women in top ranks have been felt by the Gurugram police in the past when investigating major crime against women, the organisation has found it difficult to find top lady officials.

Not having basic infrastructure for its lady staff is another factor of having fewer women officials in Gurugram police.

An RTI information had earlier revealed that out of 36 police stations that are operational in Gurugram, six stations do not have even toilets.

Top law enforcement officials have cited that improvements have been done and facilities have been created for lady cops.

There are over 2,000 vacant positions that are available in Gurugram. To meet the shortage of women officials there are plans to fill the positions with lady officials.

"Increase in the number of women professionals is one of our top priorities and we are making progress in this regard. In the coming years, we will have a substantial number of women officials in our organisation," said a senior police official from Gurugram

police.

There are 39 regular police stations, two traffic police stations, and one cyber police station in Gurugram.

From the above table, it is clear that policemen to population ratio in Gurugram is 1:187 ie 1 policeman for every 187 people for a total population of 15,14,085 and 645 policemen per 100 for a total area of 1,253.07sq kilometer.
