Hundreds of nurses protest in AIIMS

New Delhi: Hundreds of nurses at All India Institute of Medical Association or AIIMS on Wednesday protested outside the Director Committee's office inside the hospital.

About 4000 nurses working in AIIMS have been on relay hunger strike over inaction on their demands by the hospital administration since October 10. "We are protesting for salary related issues. Besides that, the condition of quarters is pretty bad, we get our quarters only after 15 years of service," said a nurse on the condition of anonymity.

When Millennium Post correspondent tried talking to the nurses, one of them said, "There is a meeting going on between the union president Harish Kumar Kajla and the Health Ministry, hence we are advised to not give any statements to the media," said another nurse.

According to reports, protesting nurses have alleged there were no separate treatment facilities for the staff, and they were given dates for surgeries for years later. Chanting slogans outside the office, hundreds of nurses sat down to continue the hunger strike. Another nurse, who didn't want to be named, said everything will be decided after the meeting on Wednesday.

The deteriorating condition of the medical institute was highlighted in the eighty seventh report of standing committee of Parliament on Health and Family Welfare, which noted that the institute was under staff and needed immediate resolution regarding pending vacancies.
