Gurugram's oldest market all set for a makeover

Gurugram: Thousands of residents who visited Gurugram's Sadar Bazaar, Jacobpura and Gurdwara road this weekend were in for a major surprise. Often troubled by congested lanes, chock-a-block traffic and hawkers, this time shopping was much easier for Gurugram's public.

After the Muncipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) took firm action against shops that were encouraging encroachments in the busy area, many vendors who are seen illegally occupying place were not seen on Sunday.

The action ensure ensured that shoppers could navigate the area easily, where just few days ago it was even difficult to walk. What was witnessed on a weekend could become a regular affair, with the MCG planning to do a makeover of the oldest market in the city.

To begin with, there are plans to completely free the area of encroachments, and create a special hi-tech zone for vendors.

There are also plans to make the entire area Wi-Fi enabled. Taking inspiration from old shopping areas in major international metropolitan cities, there are also plans to have the same kind of design for Gurugram's Sadar.

There was also an announcement made earlier to create a multi-level paking lot in proximity to Sadar Bazaar, so that the parking mess around the area can be solved.

While the sheen of Sadar may have come off in the recent past, due to sprouting of various high end malls coupled with parking and encroachment woes, the area still is popular for its old world charm.

Besides restaurants, Sadar Bazaar and Jacobpura are also famous for electronic shops, jewellers and tailors.

As Sadar is the most centrally located area in Old Gurugram, most commuters who come to the old city have to cross the market for any work.
