Gurugram agencies to focus on increasing city's green cover

Gurugram: Taking cognisance of deadly air pollution levels prevailing in the city along with massive tree felling due to developmental plans, the public agencies will now be undertaking new measures to enhance the green cover.

The Gurugram Metropolitan development authority and Municipal Corporation of Gurugram have now set a target to plant trees in the vacant areas that are under its control. Moreover, even the residents who reside in plotted areas have been requested to plant in its backyard.

According to an official data while the green cover of Gurugram district is meager eight percent while that of Gurugram city is only three per cent.

This green cover also includes the forest area of Aravallis that too in a recent report by Wildlife Institute of India is receding.

Even though the state forest department had targeted to enhance the green cover of the city to 10 percent and subsequently 20 percent in the coming years, it has not been able to meet its target.

Ironically, Delhi – which has 10 times the population of Gurugram – has a much higher green cover than its neighbour.
