Ggn shooting: In police custody, accused yet to reveal true motive

Gurugram: Over 24 hours have passed since security guard Mahipal was arrested for shooting dead 38-year-old Ritu and grievously injuring her son Dhruv on the streets of Gururgram's Sector-49 in broad daylight.

However, the 32-year-old head constable is proving to be a tough nut to crack for the district police.

After being arrested and charged under sections 302 (murder) and 307 (attempt to murder), Mahipal was produced in Gururgam district court on Sunday afternoon, where the district magistrate sent him to four-day police custody.

However, Gurugram Police have asked his custody to be extended to a week.

There are other issues that are complicating the police investigation. According to sources, even though Mahipal confessed to shooting Ritu and Dhruv, the wife and son of additional sessions judge Krishan Kant Sharma, he is still to reveal the motive of the crime.

In addition to adopting an aggressive stance during questioning, Mahipal is repeatedly changing his statement, further obfuscating the case.

Various theories are floating around justifying his motive, including mental disturbance, domestic trouble and even religious brainwashing.

For now, cops believe severe mental disturbance caused Mahipal to commit the crime. However, Deputy Commissioner of Police (East Gurugram) Sulochana Gajraj said no anti-depressants medicines were found in his quarters.

She further revealed that Mahipal had been working for judge Sharma for a long time, during which he had never shown any disgruntlement.

Cops also suspect that staying away from his family all this time may have taken a toll on Mahipal's psyche.

Other sources said that in addition to Dhruv and Ritu, whom he was escorting at the time of the crime, he also wanted to murder Dhruv's younger brother.

"The accused is mentally disturbed and is slowly beginning to realise the crime he conducted.

"He is, therefore, not speaking correctly on several issues. This is a major case and we want to make sure that all facts are placed clearly in the public domain," said Gajraj.

Taking cognisance of the gravity of the case, a special investigation team (SIT) has been formed and the case will be monitored by Director General (Crime) PK Aggarwal.
