Gahlot distributes 'free pink tickets'

New Delhi: State Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot distributed free pink tickets to women bus passengers of Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and cluster buses on Tuesday. He said that the response from women passengers was overwhelming and the Delhi government plans to increase the number of buses if there is a shortage. Talking about why the Delhi government took so long to roll out this scheme, the Transport Minister said that rolling out such schemes take time and it is not possible for any government to roll out all the schemes in one go.

Gahlot said, "The response has been great even men are happy as the women are part of their family and women are definitely happy to get free tickets as you can see it on their faces. The number of buses has been increasing every month and whatever is required from our end we will do it."

An 18-year-old Mamta accompanied by her mother Sarita and sister-in-law travelled for free to the temple. Mamta said, "In the morning when we boarded the bus at New Simapuri which was headed for Shivaji Stadium we did not know about this scheme. We were given pink tickets for free. We came to the temple and now we are going back for free too." The family of three women in the bus felt safe and secure and were delighted that a bus marshal was present there.

As much as women passengers were happy some male passengers were not pleased. Alok said, "Travellers like us are waiting in the bus for 40 minutes hopping from one bus to another, there is no bus driver. What is the point of free rides if we cannot reach our destination timely."

When questioned about

this complain, Gahlot said, "I will take feedback from

DTC and cluster buses and in case there is lack of bus drivers or conductors we will take all necessary steps to ensure a smooth flow of bus transportation. Usually we do not have shortage of conductors, at times we have shortage of drivers that too in the evening shift in South Delhi depot. Every month we plan to increase the frequency of buses."
