For only Rs 950, IMEI can be changed

New Delhi: In just Rs 950, IMEI of a stolen mobile phone can be changed. This was revealed by Parmod and Yunus who were involved in a racket of tampering IMEI. Police claimed that one of the accused had also given training to four to five people and earned several thousands of rupees as fees.
According to police, on March 5 a snatcher, Yunus, was caught at Babu Ram School picket.
During inquiry, the accused disclosed that he was going to the mobile shop for getting changed IMEI number of this mobile so that he can dispose of the mobile easily. At the instance of the accused, a person, Pramod, was caught from a mobile shop near Geeta Bhawan, Bhola Nath Nagar, and a mobile phone was recovered from him.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Nupur Prasad stated that the modus operandi of the accused is changing the IMEI number of mobile phones and selling them as genuine on higher rates. The accused rewrite IMEI numbers of unused mobile on the software of stolen mobiles with the help of devices and computer system. This is replacing the original IMEI number of stolen mobiles with that of unused ones.
Yunus (23) is unemployed whereas Pramod is a mobile phone mechanic, earlier employed with a multinational mobile phone manufacturer.
Police sources claimed that the accused Pramod had given training to four to five persons about IMEI tampering and earned several thousands rupees as fees.
