DU's libraries, labs shut as staff sits on protest demanding pending promotions

New Delhi: Many libraries and labs are shut in different colleges of Delhi University as their staff sat on protest, Wednesday, demanding promotions that have been pending from the past 20-25 years. Entering the 10th day of the protest, the staff sat outside the Art Faculty building demanding that Recruitment Rules (RR) be implemented.

In 2018, a Comprehensive Committee that consisted of professors from the university made a Draft University of Delhi (Non-Teaching) Recruitment Rules (RR). According to RR, staff that has been working for a long time, be given promotion, after considering their qualifications. Speaking to the Millennium Post Sanjay

Singh President of Delhi University Library Association said, "No promotions have taken place for the staff associated with library and labs in DU from the past 20-25 years. These people have been working in the same post for the last two decades."

Singh said that the university wants to fill the posts from outside, which is why they are delaying the implementation of RR. "All we are saying is implement the RR so that the staff can get their promotion. The authorities agree with it and are not denying it, but they have still not implemented the rules," said Shalu who has worked in Delhi University for the past 30 years.

There are about 700 to 800 members from DU, who have not got their promotion. These include library and lab staff, clerics, Assistants and senior assistants among others. Lokesh Kumar who has been working for 22 years as a Technical Assistant at Delhi University said, "We are demanding the implementation of RR rule that was filed by the Comprehensive Committee as soon as possible." The decision has to be taken by Tarun Das who is presently Registrar, at DU. Professor Das did not respond to any calls or text messages regarding the issue.
