DTU waives over Rs 2 cr fee for 314 students

New Delhi: With an aim to ensure education for all, Delhi Technical University waived off more than two crore rupees for 314 students who belong to poor economic strata of the society. 76 out of the 314 beneficiaries has received 100 per cent fee waiver whereas 238 students got 50 per cent fees waived by the university.

DTU Vice Chancellor Prof Yogesh Singh said that the fees are being waived for the students who belong to a poor financial background and the annual parental income of the student is less than 4 lakhs. These students are from both the reserved as well as the general category.

The amount that has been disbursed to the financially weaker students is calculated separately from the amount sanctioned for the reserved category students. "We are trying to provide the best of available help for the financially weaker students who are talented but could not avail education due to the university fees. It is our effort to help them," Prof Singh added. He also said that even in the current session aid will be provided to students upon approaching the concerned authorities.

According to an official, 76 students have received the full fee waiver, which amounted to Rs 82,78,500 for the university. Similarly, 238 students have received the full fee waiver, which amounted to Rs 1,36,55,500. DTU has waived a total fee of Rs 2,19,34,000 for a total of 314 students in the academic session 2017-18.

"This year, we have a slight change in the policy in order to provide maximum support to the students for the academic session 2018-19. A total of around 4 crores has been disbursed among the needy students," added Prof Madhusudan Singh, Dean, DTU.

The University is being run by the financial assistance provided by the Delhi Government and hence the university has 85 per cent seats reserved for the students belonging to Delhi and 15 per cent for the students of other states.

The official further added that DTU will make a new hostel of about one thousand rooms under the first phase and is also planning to build a 25-storey building in the premises and will be equipped with all the facilities.

The expansion of the DTU is expected to be complete in the next one-and-a-half years. DTU will increase some seats for admission from the next year. There is also a

preparation for introducing some new courses. These courses will be started keeping in mind the needs of the market.
