Delhi Metro throws open waste recycling unit in Rohini

NEW DELHI: In another major initiative towards the cause of environment conservation and scientific recycling of construction wastes, Delhi Metro on Sunday opened a waste recycling unit in north Delhi's Rohini to recycle waste produced from its demolition and construction work.
The plant will manufacture green products like aggregates, manufactured sand, concrete bricks, tiles, paver-blocks and kerb stones.
Mangu Singh, Managing Director, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) inaugurated the facility at Rohini Ranikeda area.
The plant houses crushing, screening and separation facilities, so as to maximise waste management and ensure zero-to-minimum land filling.
The plant boasts of a total capacity of processing 150 metric tonne of waste per day.
Construction and demolition waste generated by DMRC is generally dumped at designated sites, identified and approved by the government.
The recycling unit has been constructed to utilise this waste, and is one of the many initiatives taken by DMRC for environment preservation.
According to an official DMRC statement: "The construction and demolition waste transported from DMRC's locations will be recycled into green products like aggregates, manufactured sand, concrete bricks, tiles, paver blocks, kerb stones etc. Use of recycled aggregate reduces the consumption of fresh stones and sand, thus conserving natural resources and helping in reducing sand mining.
"The wet technology adapted at the plant will help in minimising process residues as well as dust and noise pollution."
The unit will be managed by infrastructure major Infrastructure Leasing and Financial Services (IL&FS).
The unit is equipped to "recover and recycle" about 95 per cent of incoming waste like cement concrete pile heads, re-bars, concrete blocks, broken bricks, cement plaster, rubble, broken
stones, soil, sand, gravel, demolished building material like railing, frames, roofing and broken glasses.
