LG asks police, Social Welfare dept to crack down on human trafficking

Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal on Thursday chaired a crime review meeting where he reviewed the issue of missing children and human trafficking-related crimes in the national Capital.

"Chaired crime review meeting. Reviewed the issue of missing children and crimes relating to human trafficking," the LG said in a series of tweets.


He also asked police and social welfare department to launch joint drives to curb the organised begging in the city. During the meeting at his residence, Baijal stressed that no compromise should be done on the safety of children and women.

The LG was informed by Delhi Police that three-fold strategy for tackling trafficking in the city comprising

prevention, protection and prosecution is underway which has resulted in a higher rate of rescue, rehabilitation and re-integration of the rescued women and children in the society with active coordination among all the stakeholders like Delhi Police, Department of Women & Child Development, NGOs etc.

It was further informed that an Anti-Human Trafficking Unit under Special CP (Crime) is operational and DCP (Crime) is the Nodal Officer in this regard.

Besides mandatory registration of FIR on every report of a missing child, cases of children of age up to eight years and missing for more than four months are automatically transferred to Anti-Human Trafficking Unit whereas cases of organised crime are investigated by the Crime Branch.

Baijal further stressed upon the need for a crackdown on the organised gangs involved in human trafficking and begging.

He directed the police to conduct joint drives with social welfare department and explore the possibility of skill development in convergence with existing government schemes, for rehabilitation of the children rescued from begging mafia and taken under their care at beggars' homes.
