Couple involved in carjacking in Dehradun nabbed

New Delhi: The Delhi Police on Sunday said they have arrested a couple involved in a carjacking case in Lajpat Nagar and recovered an automatic pistol and four live cartridges from their custody.

Cops said the accused have been identified as Vansh Varma (26) and Gazala (26).

On October 4, a taxi driver Subham Sharma filed a complaint with police that a male and two female passengers hired his cab to go from Dehradun in Uttarakhand to Palam in Delhi, and to and fro.

When they reached near Moolchand flyover in south east Delhi, the trio threatened Sharma with a pistol and robbed his Swift Dzire cab.

Acting on his complaint, cops tracked the car near R-Block Park in Raghubir Nagar area Khyala, from where two of the accused were arrested by a team from Khayala police station.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) on Sunday Monika Bharadwaj said that Gazala disclosed that she belongs to a poor family and was married in 2009. After a dispute with her husband, she began living separately and later came into contact with Vansh, who was also already married. The two soon started a relationship and began living together in a Dehradun.

Gazala claimed she was to attend her brother's marriage in her native village and wanted to impress her family members by showing herself as rich.

"Accordingly, she and the co-accused Vansh and Kajal, her friend and a resident of Roorkee, hatched a plan to rob a car to be taken to her native place. They arranged an automatic pistol from one Shabir of Raghubir Nagar," said the DCP.

She added that as per the plan of the accused, they booked a taxi car from Dehradun to Delhi. When they reached Delhi, they robbed the car at gunpoint near Moolchand and absconded.

After committing the offence, they reached Sangam Vihar at Vansh's house, changed the number plate of the car and then they came to Raghubir Nagar to meet Gazala's relatives. However, they left the vehicle near Raghubir Nagar and absconded, after which the staff of Lajpat Nagar police station tracked the robbed car on the basis of a GPS tracker.
