Cop shoots self dead over domestic discord
New Delhi: A 35-year-old Delhi Police head constable allegedly shot himself dead with his service pistol, while on duty, in the parking lot of Delhi Secretariat on Friday morning.
Cops said a note was recovered from the spot which indicated that 35-year-old Sohanveer took the extreme step due to domestic discord, police said, adding an inquiry was underway.
Police further said the incident was reported at 5.53 am. They added that a case has been registered under Section 306 (abetment of suicide) of the Indian Penal Code in this regard and investigation is underway.
Sources said that in the alleged suicide note which was recovered from the spot, Sohanveer claimed that his in-laws had assaulted him and humiliated him over the discord he and his wife had.
In the note, he also named his father-in-law as well as a personnel posted with Gautam Buddh Nagar police.
"They had on Thursday assaulted me publicly and also videographed it. It hurt my self-respect. I have no other option but to commit suicide. You can check the video and take legal action against them," Sohanveer wrote in the note.
It also talked about his wife, who is also in the police, having an extramarital affair.
As per Sohanveer's claim, a video had recently gone viral which showed man being beaten up by several persons, as he lay helplessly in the street. The person in the video is believed to be Sohanveer.
Unconfirmed reports were coming that the victim had visited the police station after he was beaten up by his in-laws about the incident.
"We are investigating the circumstances of the whole incident and how it all happened," police said.
Meanwhile, the suicide note has been directed to the office of the Delhi Police Commissioner.
