CCTV footage shows woman's cries for help went unheeded

Following the gang rape case of a woman in Pandav Nagar on Sunday, CCTV footage of the woman jumping from the first floor of her balcony to escape her captors came to fore on Tuesday.

The 17 seconds of CCTV footage showcases the undressed woman standing on the balcony of the rented flat. Also, two men were caught looking at the woman from their first floor balcony of the opposite building.

After a few seconds, the woman jumped from the balcony and landed on the staircase. Then, with the help of two men she managed to stand up. After this, one of the men left the spot while the other called the cops. Meantime, the woman tried to stop two cars for help but was refused. Soon, she managed to board an auto rickshaw and left the spot.

The incident was first reported on Sunday when the woman alleged that she was gang raped by five men in a rented flat in East Pandav Nagar. According o the complaint, she had left for the flat from her house in Munirka to meet one of her friends. After reaching the flat, she was shocked to find several unknown faces. She alleged that she was forced to consume alcohol and all her objections remain unheard. Following this, she stated that the accused took turns to rape her. Around 5.30 am on Sunday, the woman jumped off from the balcony.

On the same day, the cops arrested five men, Naveen Kumar, Prateek Kumar, Vikas Mehra, Sarvjeet and Lakshya from the crime scene. "All of them were employees of a Noida based BPO," said police sources. Initially, the cops had mistaken one of the accused Kundan as Vikas. Kundan, who is absconding is said to be the main link between the accused and the victim. The investigators have launched a man hunt for Kundan.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police, (East), Omvir Singh, soon after the PCR call, they had reached Lal Bahadur Shahstri hospital where the woman was admitted. "She had suffered leg injuries. She was also given some clothes by a woman in the neighbourhood. We took her statement where she alleged that five men had raped her. Immediately, we nabbed all the five accused".

Also, the victim alleged that two of the accused were known to her from the past two weeks. The investigators are now on the look-out for Kundan, who had initially taken the woman to the flat, after which she was raped by all the men. The accused were produced before a city court after which they were jailed. "They were booked under sections 376D (gang rape), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 377 (unnatural sex), 506 (criminal intimidation), 342 (wrongful confinement) and 34 (common intention) of Indian Penal Code.
